That never came to pass, and then it looked like it might happen in 2017, but it didn’t. Now in 2018 they again say it’s going to happen.

The bottom line is that this new battery can only be recharged 200 times, compared to 1,000 for Li-ion, and it costs $500/kWh, compared to $200/kWh for Li-ion.

But if you really need 40 minutes of flight time for your drone, then you might be willing to pay $125 for a battery five times as often.

The FAA needs to get cranking on this, their certifications only mention piston or turbine engines, so you can’t get electric planes certified right now.

Just not necessarily everything that everybody says is going to happen.

They also show a physical model of the aircraft, of indeterminate size and operability, but eventually it’s supposed to become a small, regional airliner that you’ll “feel good” about flying in because it’s quiet and it produces nearly zero emissions. And then if you look at this story – This LA company is developing all-electric, zero-emission airplane – you find out that what they have right now is an electric motor that they’re planning to retrofit onto an existing aircraft, possibly with as many as six passengers, possibly with a 100 mile range, possibly by 2020.

However, they’ve made no claims about charging rate.

Fisker’s battery increases available surface area by interleaving single atom thick graphene with a lithium compound a few atoms thick. However there are still scientific and technical hurdles to overcome, so at this time it’s not even certain that this will be a product.
