Two years later, first SolidEnergy devices may reach the market

In 2016 I was very excited by the news from SolidEnergy Systems that they were going to release batteries with twice the density of regular Li-ion batteries. That never came to pass, and then it looked like it might happen in 2017, but it didn’t. Now in 2018 they again say it’s going to happen.

The bottom line is that this new battery can only be recharged 200 times, compared to 1,000 for Li-ion, and it costs $500/kWh, compared to $200/kWh for Li-ion.

But if you really need 40 minutes of flight time for your drone, then you might be willing to pay $125 for a battery five times as often.
